Abstract
Intussusception is most frequent and important surgical condition in infancy and childhood. This clinical studies consist of 210 cases who were admitted to the department of pediatrics and surgery of Severance Hospital from Jan. 1957 to Dec. 1971.
1) In age incodency, 68.8% of the patients are under one year of age. The peak incidence occurs from 4th to 9th month.
2) Males are more often affected than females. Male to female ratio was 2.2:1 in our series.
3) In seasonal incidency, spring and winter are provalent (60%).
4) Etiologic causes were 83.3% of idiopathic and 16.7% of demonstrable causes in childhood.
5) In anaysis of anatomical type, the most common type of ileocecal type(50.5%). ileocolic was 34.5%, colocolic was 6.5%, ileocecal was 5.7%.
6) The cardinal symptoms and signs were vomiting(88%), current jelly stool(79.5%), abdominal pain(76.2%), and palpable abdominal mass(58.6%).
7) In our series of 210 cases, we treated to reduce the 71 cases(33.8%) of intussusception with hydrostatic pressure reduction. Operative manual reduction was 100 cases(47.6%), and segmental resection was 38 cases(18.1%).
8) the complication rate was 10.4% and recurrent rate was 3.3%.
9) Our mortality rate in 210 cases of intussusception was 3.8%.
